This baptism card includes four circles that illustrate aspects of baptism, a ceremony that inaugurates a new life in Christ. In the center is a shell, an ancient symbol of baptism. Drawings from the catacombs depict early Christians using seashells to pour water on the baptized. Behind the shell is a palm branch which symbolizes victory over darkness. Next, the gold circle details light and drops of oil. Often the baptized is anointed in oil as a sign of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:17). The third blue circle represents water as a symbol of cleansing from sin and defeat over the powers of darkness. See if you can find in this layer the ark, symbol of God’s preservation in water, and Egyptian wheels and helmets referencing the story of the Red Sea, and Gods defeat of the powers of this world. Finally, all of these layers are framed by from Romans 15:11 as a blessing on the baptized.
